December 10, 2012

- When I clicked on the photo I was able to move the picture around.
- This camera is a manual camera that lets you move, focus, and zoom after the photo is taken.
- A photographer would have to know about aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.
- In my opinion it isn't worth the money because you can still capture the same photos with a regular camera, but this camera would be fun to play around with.

- On the computer her lips and eyes were enlarged and altered and the tone of her face.
- In my opinion it is okay to do it. I mean its advertising and it helps their business debating if consumers buy in or not.
- It would be wrong to manipulate photos like this if it were in some competition.
-It would be okay for advertising but wrong to trick people. Such as newspapers.
-Fashion photography can let you edit as much as you want while photojournalism take the picture then and there and writes captions that are irrelevant.
- Both types of photography are for those that are wanting, gathering, or is interested by information.

Self Portraits

"You can also use yourself as a test subject for experimenting with lighting or other creative techniques".
"Be silly, don’t be afraid to over-act".
"Have fun with it. Be sexy. Be yourself. Be awesome. Be different. Be creative. Whatever you do, have fun with it. That’s part of the point, after all".

I liked these two portraits because they both focus on the people in the picture, but you can get a hint on what they do as a profession without it being the main focus. Basically they added objects in the photo.

I picked these two self portraits because they are unique. The first one shows silliness and can capture peoples eye. The second one focuses on the face witch emphasizes the details of her features.

I chose these two photos because they are simple and look good. They both look professional.

In the self portraits I will be shooting Jin or Matthew. In my portrait I would like to be found in the hallways, football field, and in a classroom. In the hallways I would like to be the only person in the hallways. I would like for this picture to emphasize that I'm a student. In this photo I would make gestures and poses that you can normally find me doing during school as a casual self portrait. At the football field I would want the viewer to see the athlete in me. I would like the field goal post to be in the picture. If I could, I would like to be dressed in athletic attire. I would like this picture to be an environmental photo. The photo in the classroom I would like this to be a self portrait that I took my self. In this photo I would like to have a chalkboard in the background that has designs or possibly my name. I would like to have school materials out to give the viewer a mind that I'm a high school student. Some photos should have the rule of thirds or simplicity.

American Solider Slide Show & Captions (Review)

I believe this image holds the most power because they are in life and death situations and they found a moment where they can let loose. This image shows a bond witch can be powerful.

1) Home at Denver: Images 1-8
2) In Basic Training: Images 17-30
3) In Iraq: Images 51-70
4) Back In Denver: Images 72-83
-In my opinion I think the Home at Denver Images have the most power because it shows how enlisting in the army effects the people around him.

C) The Images come together and tell a story by themselves because the images show step by step what has occurred to Ian.

3) The images of Ian are usually present tense.
B) The captions tell the story of what is actually going on rather than guessing.

Image #26
During basic training in Dallas, Fort Worth, a gift was given for falling asleep, as his fellow troop smothers his head in shaving cream. Awoken by a sergeant, he and all other troops had gotten a punishment for the immaturity.

Image#35
Arriving home in August, he takes a trip to the jerwley shop in the mall, as his girlfriend Kayla finds the "perfect" marriage ring. Later that day Ian is called upon by his sergeant for duties, in which aggravate Kayla to the point of splitting up.

Image#47
Coming home to friends and family after the fall, they gather once again for his last departure of the year. As he leaves to Iraq he wrote letters stating that he will be home again soon, during the summer.

A) The other features enlighten the photographs by informing us about the details that we can vividly see in our mind.
B) Videos tell you the story and can release more information.  The video gather sadness from the families experience.
C) Photos can vividly show you little details that a video can't.

Abandon Theme Parks

Takakanonuma Greenland, Habara, Japan

If I had to pick an abandon amusement park to take pictures of, I would pick the Takakanonma, in Harbara Japan. The reason I pick this amusement park is because it has history behind it. During its existence the amusement park caused multiple casualties and soon became haunted. I would want the capture the haunted scenery. I want the viewer to realize what the amusement park has caused by only looking at the photo. All together this place has a spooky feel and that is something I desire.

1) Nuclear Battlefields
2) North Korea
3) Concentration Camps
4) Volcanos/ Natural Disasters

Great Black and White Photographers Part III

1) The two photos I posted for Great Black and White Photographers Part II caught my eye because the photo had some type of event that caught my eye. The photo with the man and the younger person caught my eye because the person laying down had stitches on its head. It is quite unusual but has a story behind it. The Photo with dead bodies caught my eye because the photographer was involved within the war.

2)

I see: I see warfare and pain. I see some type of struggle upon the dead and hurt people. I see destruction within the people and the location of the war.

I smell: I smell dead bodies and smoke lingering in the air. I smell stained pavement and dirt. I smell the soldiers sweat and body odor.

I hear: I hear moaning and groaning. I hear yelling and surrendering. I hear medical use and other peers. I hear the gun shots and explosives such as grenades.

I taste: I taste the sweat falling from my face on my lips. I taste the left over saliva. I taste the bad breathe from not having the chance to brush my teeth. I state metal and blood.

I feel: I feel my stomach turning from not eating a warm meal. I feel thirsty and my dry cracked tongue grasping for liquid. I feel sick and disgusted from the gory atmosphere. I feel tired because of lack of sleep.

3) In my opinion I would like to share a poster of my photographer. It is a way that more people can see what my photographer has accomplished.

Academic Shoot Reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you?
- For me It was a little difficult to find a decent framing picture. I did not want to come out with the same picture everyone else has. I also had trouble finding a good class room.

2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.
- During the assignment I was mostly thinking about the focus because I wanted to capture the rules correctly. For instance, the framing picture it was hard to focus on the class room rather than the door.
3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?
-The thing I would do differently is take my time to get a better picture rather than rush.

4. What things would you do the same?
- I would have kept the rule of thirds photo. I also would have visited the same classes.

5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve?
- Simplicity and lines.
6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture?
- Avoiding Mergers

7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out? - I would say I have all of them down but if it came down to one, it would be, The Rule of Thirds. I could just look them up on the website on Akins Photo J Blog.what that rule is?

Academic Shoot

 RULE OF THIRDS
I believe I followed the rule well because there is an object or person not focused in the middle.
In this photo I would like the viewer to focus on the students paper but also realize who's paper and materials that belongs to. The only thing I would change about this photo is focus on the student.

 LINES
I think I followed the rule correctly because there are several horizontal lines. In this photo I want the viewers eye to realize that there are horizontal lines betrayed by bacon. If I could better the picture I would place more bacon down and make them a little more straight.

 FRAMING
In this photo I followed the rule correctly because there is a natural frame within the picture itself. In this photo I want the viewer to notice what class looks like from the outside. If I could change this photo I would would move a little more to the right to get an even frame.

 AVOIDING MERGERS
In this photo I think I did an average job because, there are easier and better ways to take an avoiding merger photo. In this photo I would like to the viewer to notice the pen and the No Haters button. The colors of the button and pen almost blend or match with the shirt. If I could change the photo I would adjust the pen to the red side since it is a multi color pen so it could match with the button.

SIMPLICITY
In this photo I think I did an okay job because it focuses on someone holding a shark tooth. It is easy to see what is important. I would like to capture the viewers eye by the quality of the participant's hand and shark tooth. If I could change the photo I would remove the shark tooth and add a pencil to have a better academic feel.

BALANCE
In this photo I think I did a good job of showing balance because the photo can be split in half and almost have the same amount of people on each side. I want the viewer to know what that I wanted to capture students working. If I could change the photo I would add another person the the right side of the picture.

Africa & Mural Project

This photo has an elephant walking while dust particles are coming off of it. It is my favorite because it is simple and has something unique going on with the elephant. I also like the quality.
One of the rules that this photo implies is, Simplicity and Avoiding Mergers. It shows simplicity because It focuses on one object with a simple background. This picture also shows avoiding mergers because there is dust coming off the elephant which looks like there is a cloud following the elephant.

Nick Brandt uses a Pentax 67II and uses various lenses.
Nick Brandt had fallen in love with animals and wanted to capture them in his own way.
He wanted to capture that animals before that are extinct because of mankind.
"What I am interested in is showing the animals simply in the state of being".

INSTAGRAM

1. What theme that we could take here at school could we do a
series of these panels to place around the school?
- Random facial expressions.

2. Should we use phones only, or should we open it up to our regular cameras for those people that don't have camera phones?
-It should be open for options.

3. Where would you want to put the mural on campus?
-A place where everyone can see, cafeteria?

Academic Photo Shoot

The Story
This photo tells a story because almost everyone in the United States can relate to, standing for the Pledge of Allegiance, and taking a moment of silence.

Action & Emotion

This photo shows action and emotion all three beings in this picture are having some type of joy. One of the students is giving a "noogy" to the older gentlemen while the lady in grey is laughing.

Filling The Frame
This photo is a good example of filling in the frame because everyone in the picture is involved in an interesting lab.

During football practice, the offensive player stiff arms the defensive player to the point where the tackler fell down grasping for the ball carriers jersey.

1. Why did you pick this photo?
- I picked this photo because these moments are what athletes want to review and show off.
2. What rules of photography are evident in the photo?
- Simplicity, because it focused on the event with a non distracting background.

1. Where do you think you could take photos like the ones you look at today?
- In another class that involves these events (chemistry) or after school for football practice.

2. Whose classroom would you like to visit and take photos in?
- Coach Garza's football athletic period

3. What will you do, as the photographer, to get amazing photos like you look at today?
- Use the rules of photography

Post Shoot Reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos of your first 3 prompts (Red, Metal, Happy)
- For Red, I had a challenge finding a vivid red. In Metal I had trouble finding a metal that had the quality for good photo. For Happy, I had trouble finding a good smile.

2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly.
- In the assignment I found myself thinking about the focus. I want the viewer to see what I think is important. For example, In the Metal photo, I wanted to focus on the red, metal, lockers to try and fit the topic.

3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?
- If I were to do the assignment over I would of tried to get a better picture of the car because, there is another red car in the background witch is apart of avoiding merges.

4. What things would you do the same?
- I would keep the photo of happy because it is a good example of happy and simplicity.

5. Finally - go back and edit your blogs with the 3 photos (red, metal, happy), tell me what rules of composition (which you just learned about) did you end up actually achieving? Did you have any?
- I accomplished Simplicity, Rule of Thirds, Lines, but didn't achieve Avoiding Mergers.

6. Are you interested in shooting those prompts again, why?
- Yes, because I know some guidelines to make a better photo.

6 Rules of Photography

Simplicity

The technique is basically where you focus on one direct object with a simple background that docent interfere with the photo. I picked this photo for Simplicity because the photographer focused on one object with a simple background.

Rule of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds deal with sections of the picture. It is basically taking a picture that isn't centered in the middle. I picked this photo for Rule of Thirds because the firemen and the citizen are on the left side of the photo.

Lines

Lines is simple. Its just a picture that shows patterns of lines or rays leading to the subject. I picked this photo for lines because it shows multiple rays toward the smoke and people escaping.

Balance

Balance is something that the eye doesn't catch automatically. It depends if the photo has an object that corresponds with the another object on the other half of the picture. I picked this photo for balance because of the men running. If you were to divide the photo in half, vertically, there would be an even amount of men wearing light colored shirts and dark colored shirts. Two men wearing white and one dark.

Framing

Framing happens when there are objects in the picture that form a natural frame within the picture. I picked this photo for Framing because the pictures of people develop a natural frame around the man looking at the posts.

Avoiding Merges

Avoiding Merges happens when the background steals the the views attention or, when then objects are cut off within the picture. I picked this photo for Avoiding Merges because the background of debris almost camouflages with part of the firetruck.

Unusual & Interesting Photos

PART ONE

1. What is your reaction to his work?
- This image catches my eye because it is unusual and is some what of an illusion
2. How do you think he made these photos?
- I think this photo is made by making multiples of a single photo and layering some of the photos on top with a lower alpha setting.3 Think about some buildings you have seen, which ones would be good to take a photo like this? Tell me about those buildings, where are they, could you get easy access to them?

- The UT tower which is located here, downtown Austin. Its a simple structure. This building would be and easy building to capture but, would look good with this effect.

PART TWO

1. Why did you pick this photo?
- I think the photographer did a great job of capturing the firemen with a dark background witch emphasizes the smoke or dust.
2. What category did you find this photo?
- Domestic News3. What award did it win (what place)?
- This photo did not win an award but had gotten a "Honorable Mention"4. What did the photographer do that attracted your eye? (I am not talking about the subject, but what the photographer did)
- The photographer might have adjusted the effects to bring out, not only the firemen but, the smoke coming off of them. 5. How much do you think the subject of the photo weighed in the judges minds when they picked this photo as one of the best of 2012?
- I think the subject weighed heavily because, firemen are today's heroes.6. What do you think the photographer had to do that was unique to getting this photo?
- I think the photographer went threw the same events as the firemen did.

1. Why did you pick this photo?
- I think the detail of the horses racing is beautiful.
2. What category did you find this photo?
-Sports Actions
3. What award did it win (what place)?
- 1st Place
4. What did the photographer do that attracted your eye? (I am not talking about the subject, but what the photographer did)
- The fact that the photographer got close enough to get the debris from the horses running is unique.
5. How much do you think the subject of the photo weighed in the judges minds when they picked this photo as one of the best of 2012?
- I believe that the judges weighed this photo heavily because uniqueness of this photo. Having to get close to running horses and capturing this photo is amazing.
6. What do you think the photographer had to do that was unique to getting this photo?
- Getting this photo might have been difficult because he had to risk some sort of injury, getting so close to the horses running.

PART THREE

1) "What this can teach photographers is to never stop looking for the right angle to take a photo". Said below the painting of Edgar Mueller.
2) "Four things every photographer should know how to do: take a photo of a reflection, take a photo of a hand, take a photo of him/herself, and take a photo showing perspective". Said below the photo of Hand With Reflecting Sphere by: M.C. Escher
3) "Being able to capture a story telling expression is an awesome skill to have as a photographer". Said below the painting of The Gossips by Norman Rockwell

- The photographer didn't fully follow the suggestions.
- The painting that influenced me the most was the sphere photo.

Ethics In Photography

In this article states that there are photography rules. Meaning, that there are some things you can't do when you edit a photo. If you don't comply with some of these rules you may be fined, or even incarcerated. Even adding or taking off simple objects within the picture can cause problems. This article gives examples of some famous photographers that had edited their photos in the wrong way and, gotten in some sort of trouble.
In my opinion I believe that editing photos is acceptable but, to the point where you add discriminating adjustment of a being, then it is wrong. I believe editing is acceptable because the photographer obviously wants the best photo to be shown. It is unethical when photographers add fake or unreal adjustments just to get viewed.

I believe this photo is most unethical because the editor added a personnel that wasn't actually. Bush and Saddam never debated together or ever been together.

In my opinion I believe this picture is the least unethical because the photographer edited the photo in a positive manner.
